That is what Japanese people speak and is used in anime, Japanese films, etc.
It is culturally different from written language taught at language schools and through textbooks.
You are learning written language if you are studying grammar.
Grammar does not help much with spoken Japanese because it is for written Japanese.
That means you must learn spoken Japanese if you are already learning the 'written' language.
Speaking in written Japanese can unintentionally offend people, even though you are using polite language - it can be too 'assertive'.
"Language acquisition comes from input,
not output;
from comprehension, not production."
Acquisition/Learning Facilitator and Language Coach
I help English speakers and those who speak similar European languages acquire Japanese. I also assist Japanese speakers with their English.
I have worked as a translator, interpreter, researcher and writer in the print media in Japan and Britain, including the Asahi Shimbun in the UK and The Daily Telegraph (their Tokyo Correspondent Bureau).
I have studied Japanese and British societies and cultures comparatively, culminating in my PhD in Sociology/Cultural Studies.
I have written and performed standup comedy semi-professionally.
My professional experience and knowledge have informed the Cultural Input Method.
Understanding spoken Japanese is understanding Japanese culture.
